Al-Caliph FC celebrated its maiden cup victory by winning the SunSports Magnificents Soccer Team 11-a-side May 2007 Tournament over in Fernvale on the 10th June 2007.
Al-Caliph, which means Warriors, was formed at the end of 2006 by a group of friends who regularly play weekend street soccer. They had previously competed in a couple of 7-aside tournaments organised by Sunsports coming close to the quarters at best.
In Round 16, they met Forza Azzuri. It went into penalties which Al-Caliph won in sudden death. In the quarters, they met Bro Union. Bro Union scored after a defensive poor clearance. Al-Caliph pounded on the pressure and they equalised at the death of full time. Their keeper won the game by saving a penalty. In the semis, they met Newcastle United Fans Club boasted of a few exciting players. Alas, Al-Caliph proved too good when they won the game 2-0. In the final, they probably met one of the strongest competitor in the competition - West Combine, a team that had played together for about 8 years now. The final was played in good spirit. It was played clean with sportsmanship. In the end both couldnt find the back of the net and it went into penalties. Both sides cleared their 3 mandatory kicks. It went into sudden death. Al-Caliph ballooned a shot. West Combine would have won it if they had scored but the kicker skied it! Alas, Al-Caliph's keeper saved their last shot to send Al-Caliph wild.
Congratulations once again to Al-Caliph FC!
